Every orange cone, flashing arrow board, and temporary lane closure represents something far more important than construction.
It represents people.
Road workers, utility crews, emergency responders, and highway maintenance teams risk their lives every day while working just feet away from fast-moving traffic.
Unfortunately, many drivers underestimate how dangerous work zones truly are.
According to national highway safety research, hundreds of people are killed and tens of thousands are injured in work zone crashes every year across the United States. Many of these crashes are preventable.
This course was developed using principles aligned with:
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) safety guidance
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety practices
Defensive driving education standards
Work zone traffic control awareness principles
The goal is simple:
In this section, students will learn how to identify and respond to hazards commonly found in work zones before they become dangerous situations.
Topics include:
Reading traffic patterns ahead
Understanding changing traffic flow
Recognizing high-risk situations
Identifying dangerous driver behaviors
Using defensive driving techniques in construction areas
This section focuses on improving awareness, decision-making, and safe driving habits to help drivers navigate work zones calmly, safely, and responsibly.
